KOOTENAI HEALTH
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT EXPANSION

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

The primary goal for this project was to increase the number of exam rooms to meet anticipated growth for several years into the future. The project resulted in a 15,000 square-foot renovation and 8,000 square-foot addition to existing Emergency Department to increase exam rooms from 24 to 36, including four trauma rooms, four behavioral health rooms, an airborne infection isolation room, 27 exam rooms, and supporting spaces. Another goal was to create a second public entrance to the facility with clearly-defined wayfinding, repeating recognizable elements of the recently completed East Addition. Our team worked with the user group on Lean principals and led the group through an intense, three-day 3P event to increase efficiency and improve the patient experience while decreasing wait times.
